The Science Behind
BDD Electrochemistry

Understanding how boron-doped diamond electrodes deliver superior performance in oxidation, disinfection, and thermal management.

What is BDD?

BDD stands for Boron-Doped Diamond — a synthetic diamond film where boron atoms are incorporated into the diamond crystal lattice during the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth process.

This doping transforms diamond from an electrical insulator into a conductive material with extraordinary electrochemical properties. BDD electrodes exhibit the widest electrochemically active potential window of any known electrode material, making them exceptionally powerful for generating oxidizing species.

The result is an electrode that can produce hydroxyl radicals (OH) — among the most powerful oxidizing agents in nature — directly from water molecules at its surface, enabling pollutant destruction without adding chemicals.

How It Works

From electrode fabrication to clean output in four steps.

01

BDD Electrode Fabrication

Boron-doped diamond films are synthesized on substrate materials using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology.

02

Electrochemical Activation

When voltage is applied, the BDD electrode surface generates hydroxyl radicals (OH) — one of the strongest oxidizing agents known.

03

Pollutant Degradation

The generated radicals attack and break down organic contaminants into harmless byproducts (CO2 and H2O) without secondary pollution.

04

Clean Output

Treated water or disinfected space meets regulatory standards with minimal environmental impact.

Technical Advantages

BDD electrodes vs. conventional electrode technologies.

FeatureBDD ElectrodeConventional
Oxidation Efficiency Exceptional Moderate
Electrode Lifespan Very Long Limited
Energy Consumption Lower Higher
Secondary Pollution Minimal Significant
Chemical Additives Not Required Often Required
Operating Cost Competitive Higher Long-term

Application Domains

Environmental Protection

Industrial wastewater treatment, municipal sewage upgrading, contaminated groundwater remediation.

Disinfection & Sterilization

Ozone generation for food safety, medical sterilization, public hygiene, and aquaculture water treatment.

Thermal Management
