Tech diamond glossary
The vocabulary of technology-grade grown diamond, explained for procurement teams, engineers and investors.
- TGGD
- Technology-grade grown diamond: lab-grown diamond produced for industrial, electronic and scientific use rather than jewelry.
- CVD
- Chemical vapor deposition: a growth method that builds diamond layer by layer from a carbon-containing gas plasma.
- HPHT
- High pressure high temperature: a growth method that reproduces the conditions of natural diamond formation.
- NV center
- Nitrogen-vacancy center: a diamond lattice defect that acts as a room-temperature quantum sensor.
- BDD
- Boron-doped diamond: electrically conductive diamond used for electrodes and electrochemistry.
- Nanodiamond
- Diamond particles at the nanometre scale used in bio-imaging, drug delivery, lubricants and seeding.
- Heat spreader
- A diamond layer or plate that draws heat away from high-power electronics to keep them within safe operating temperature.
- Ultra-wide bandgap
- A semiconductor bandgap far wider than silicon, enabling higher voltages, faster switching and lower losses.
